The Hindman Shipping Company

One of the longest operating privately owned shipping companies on the Great lakes, the Hindman Transportation Company and their fleet made Owen Sound’s harbour their home for over 39 years.

This exhibit captures the story of an extraordinary  man who founded the company, the family that helped him succeed and the vessels that flew their flags and bore their names.

In 1940 Captain George Hindman formed the Diamond Steamship Company. His fleet grew until the company and all of the ships were sold in 1951. Then Captain Hindman formed the Hindman Transportation Company and started to rebuild his fleet.  The ships of the Hindman fleets called Owen Sound home for almost 40 years.
